For individuals over 65, refractive lens exchange (RLE) is the preferred method, as the natural
lens often becomes cloudy or less flexible due to aging. This procedure offers permanent results
and can correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and presbyopia.
The results are typically permanent, as the artificial lens does not age or change. A second
procedure is rarely necessary, providing long-term stable vision.
Refractive lens exchange is painless and performed under local anesthesia. Some patients may
experience a mild foreign body sensation during healing, which usually disappears within a few
days.
Most patients can return to normal activities the next day. However, it is recommended to avoid
intense sports and heavy lifting for about a week.
Since the implanted lens remains stable, additional vision correction is usually not necessary.
If other age-related conditions such as cataracts develop, these are already addressed through
refractive lens exchange.
The procedure is generally safe, but temporary side effects such as dry eyes, glare, or halos
may occur. A comprehensive pre-examination helps minimize potential risks.
In many cases, lens exchange is still possible, even with pre-existing conditions. Each case is
evaluated individually to ensure the best possible outcome for your eye health.
Public health insurance usually does not cover the costs. However, private health insurance may
